How to Fix the “There was a Problem in Resetting Your PC” Error on Windows

A few days back, I was facing a storage issue, so I thought to reset the PC to fix it. And imagine it to be a child’s play but it took my whole day. I tried to reset my PC, but every time I did, the error message “There was a problem resetting your PC. No changes were made” appeared on my screen.

I googled and tried many methods and finally came up with some of the verified ways that resolve this issue.

I performed various methods as the error itself suggests that the PC will remain in the same state, and the reset won’t be applied. A computer might get stuck in a reset loop in worse scenarios, making it impossible to boot up your system. Luckily, I got some methods that can fix these issues.

What causes the “There was a problem resetting your PC” error in windows?

Getting errors like this makes resetting or booting the device impossible, depending on where the error has been seen. It generally occurs whenever something goes wrong while booting the system. Windows first runs into the Automatic Repair wizard and fixes the issues automatically. And if it failed, we have to Refresh or Reset the machine. But at most times, Windows 10 reset failed and generate error messages. Here are some other variations of the error message on different builds of Windows 10:

  • There was a problem resetting your PC. No changes were made.
  • There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes were made.
  • You can’t reset your PC.
  • There was a problem resetting your laptop or computer.

If any of these error messages popped up at the end of the resetting process then you’re required to do some fixing. Here are some verified methods to do the same.

Method 1: Run the System File Checker

It’s a possibility that the system has corrupted system files which preventing it from resetting the PC. Running the System File Checker (SFC) will allow us to repair these files and try resetting the PC again. So, to run the system file checker follow the procedure below:

1. Press Win + X, menu list pop-ups. Now select Command Prompt (Admin) from the list. If this option isn’t available then search for Command Prompt in the windows search bar and then right-click on the best match and choose Run as administrator. If the dialog box prompted then click yes.

2. When Command Prompt opens, type the command sfc /scan now and press enter key to start scanning your PC

3. SFC scan will now start and wait for the scan to reach 100% completion. It automatically repairs the system errors if any. This allows files associated with the error to repair and function properly.

4. Restart your computer and attempt to reset your PC again.

If this method didn’t work for you then try method 2 below.

Method 2: Run the DISM scan.

1. Repeat step 1 of Method 1 i.e. opens the command prompt in administrator mode.

2. When Command Prompt opens, type the command DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press enter key to start scanning your PC.

3. Once the DISM scan is finished restart your computer and attempt to reset your PC again.

If this method also didn’t work for you then try method 3 below.

Method 3: Rename System and Software Registry

One of the possible reasons for this issue is when the System or Software registry hives have become damaged or corrupted.

1. Repeat step 1 of Method-1 i.e opens the command prompt in administrator mode.

2. When Command Prompt opens:

  • Type cd %windir%\system32\config and press enter key.
  • Next, type ren system system.001 and press enter.
  • Lastly, type ren software software.001 and press enter.

3. Once you’re done, close Command Prompt (by typing EXIT or clicking a close button) and restart your PC. Attempt to reset your PC again.

If this method didn’t work for you then try method 4 below.

Method 4: Disable ReAgentc.exe

1. Repeat step 1 of Method-1 i.e opens the command prompt in administrator mode.

2. Type reagentc /disable and press enter.

3. Re-enable the ReAgentc.exe process by typing reagentc /enable and press enter.

4. Once you’re done, close Command Prompt (by typing EXIT or clicking a close button) and restart your PC. Attempt to reset your PC again.

If this method didn’t work for you then try method 5 below.

Method 5: Refresh Windows from Windows Defender

Windows Defender is an integrated tool to help us fix the issues related to the computer. Its primary purpose is to deal with viruses, malware, and other security issues.
When the PC is refreshed, most of the files in the system drive will get deleted. So make sure to take back up of anything important.

After you’re done backing up the files, follow these steps to refresh through Windows Defender:

1. Open the Settings app by pressing down the Windows + I keys on your keyboard. Or click on the gear icon in the Start menu.

2. Click on the Update & Security tab.

3. Click on the Windows Security tab from the left-side menu. In other versions of Windows 10, it is called Windows Defender.

4. Click on the Open Windows Security button. Windows Defender Security Center will get open up.

5. Scroll down and choose Device performance & health. And under the Device Performance & health window click on the Additional settings link under the Fresh start section.

6. Now, click on Get Started and follow the on-screen instructions for refreshing the PC. After that attempt a reset again.

If this method didn’t work for you then try method 6 below.

Method 6: Use a System Restore Point

If you have a System Restore point setup, you might return to that point and fix the errors automatically. By returning to one of those points, you basically send your computer back in time. And thhis method will only work if your point was set when there were no errors exist in your PC. However, it’s still worth a shot, as your files will never be harmed when doing a System Restore.

1. In the search bar, type System Restore. Choose the option Create a restore point.

2. System Properties windows will open. Now, switch to the System Protection tab as shown.

3. Click on the System Restore button.

4. When the System Restore window opens, click Next.

5. Choose a point at which you want to return. In windows, the system may automatically create restore points after software installations and updates. Select an appropriate return point, and click Next.

6. Follow the on-screen instructions in the restoration wizard to return your system to a selected past point. When you’re done, check if you are able to fix the issue or not by resetting the PC again. If the problem persists, then you need to reboot the system.
